Willkommen im Aquarium der Kugelfische – Endlich wird es klappen. Wir haben uns schon Ende 2019 mit dieser argentinischen Band beschäftigt, denn wir sollten ein Portrait über die Prog-Rocker Fughu machen. Dann kam die Pandemie und deren Europa-Tour war Geschichte.
Bands wie Flor De Loto (Peru), Tryo (Chile) oder auch Fughu sind Stars in ihrer Heimat, verschmelzen auf ihre Art die heutige Musik Europas mit den traditionellen Wurzeln ihrer Heimat. Nicht oft hat man das Vergnügen, die großen Stars der südamerikanischen Szene hier in Europa zu sehen. Ariel Bellizio (Gitarre) und Alejandro López (Schlagzeug) trafen sich 1999 in einer Schule im Buenos Aireser Stadtteil Saavedra, blieben danach bis heute unzertrennlich. Der zehnjährige Marcelo Malmierca, Sohn eines recht unbekannten Jazz-Schlagzeugers, baute damals früh eigene Synthesizer und blieb den Schwarz-Weiss-Tasten treu. Bassist Juan Manuel „Juanma“ López ist Fan von David Bowie. Sänger der Truppe wurde Santiago Burgi. Wer als Band von Mike Portnoy persönlich ausgewählt wird und dann im März 2008 im Luna Park Stadion in Buenos Aires als Vorband von Dream Theater auftritt, muss schon einiges können und richtiggemacht haben. Erst danach veröffentlichten Fughu ihr Debüt Absence (2009) das besonders in Argentinien, aber auch weltweit große Anerkennung fand. Einen gewaltigen Schritt nach vorne machten Fughu vier Jahre später mit dem Konzept-Album Human (2013). Es wurde in zwei Teilen veröffentlicht, als Human (The Tales) und Human (The Facts). Wie sehr ihr Ansehen inzwischen gewachsen war, zeigte sich auch an der Liste der beteiligten renommierten Gäste.
Mit diesen rockigen Alben im Gepäck gingen Fughu erfolgreich auf Europa-Tour. Kurze Zeit später beschloss Sänger Santiago Burgi diese Formation zu verlassen, um sich auf seine Karriere als Opernsänger in Deutschland zu konzentrieren. Nach einer intensiven Suche (weit über 100 Sänger bewarben sich) wurde die Lücke 2017 mit Renzo Favaro geschlossen. 2016 produzierte die Band das vielbeachtete Musikvideo zu Quirk Of Fate. Nun war es Zeit für eine ausgedehnte Tournee in Mittelamerika. Zurück in Buenos Aires trat Fughu als Vorband der italienischen Legende Premiata Forneria Marconi (PFM) auf. 2020 veröffentlichte Fughu das Album Lost Connection mit zehn neuen Songs und wieder mit prominenten Gastbeiträgen. Damit stieg die Reputation der Band noch weiter. 2022 absolvierte Fughu seine zweite Europatournee und spielte diesmal auf großen Festivals in Deutschland und Polen. Die Reaktionen des Publikums waren überwältigend. Den krönenden Abschluss dieser Tour bildete ein großartiges Konzert auf einem der wichtigsten Prog-Festivals der Welt, dem Night Of The Prog Festival, Loreley. Zurück in Buenos Aires eröffnete die Band ein Konzert für Sons Of Apollo und begannen die Arbeit am nächsten Werk. Für alle Liebhaber der harten anspruchsvollen Rockmusik: ein Muss dieses argentinische Quintett, wenn möglich in freier Wildbahn, mit ihrem letzten Album Stolen Pictures (2024) Live zu erleben.

We started looking into this Argentinian band back in late 2019, as we were supposed to do a profile on the prog-rocker Fughu. Then the pandemic hit, and their European tour was canceled. Bands like Flor De Loto (Peru), Tryo (Chile), and Fughu are stars in their home countries, blending contemporary European music with their traditional roots. It's not often you get the chance to see the big names of the South American scene here in Europe. Ariel Bellizio (guitar) and Alejandro López (drums) met in 1999 at a school in the Saavedra district of Buenos Aires and have remained inseparable ever since. Ten-year-old Marcelo Malmierca, the son of a relatively unknown jazz drummer, built his own synthesizer at a young age and has remained true to the black and white keys ever since. Bassist Juan Manuel "Juanma" López is a David Bowie fan. The band's singer was Santiago Burgi. Being personally selected by Mike Portnoy to open for Dream Theater at Luna Park Stadium in Buenos Aires in March 2008 is a sign that Fughu must have done something special. Only after this success did they release their debut album, Absence (2009), which garnered significant acclaim, particularly in Argentina, but also internationally. Fughu took a giant leap forward four years later with the concept album Human (2013). It was released in two parts: Human (The Tales) and Human (The Facts). The extent to which their reputation had grown was evident in the list of renowned guest artists involved. With these rocking albums in tow, Fughu embarked on a successful European tour. Shortly afterward, singer Santiago Burgi decided to leave the band to focus on his career as an opera singer in Germany. After an intensive search (well over 100 singers applied), the gap was filled in 2017 with Renzo Favaro. In 2016, the band produced the highly acclaimed music video for "Quirk Of Fate." Now it was time for an extensive tour of Central America. Back in Buenos Aires, Fughu performed as the opening act for the Italian legends Premiata Forneria Marconi (PFM). In 2020, Fughu released the album "Lost Connection" with ten new songs and, once again, prominent guest appearances. This further enhanced the band's reputation. In 2022, Fughu completed their second European tour, this time playing at major festivals in Germany and Poland. The audience's reaction was overwhelming. The crowning finale of this tour was a magnificent concert at one of the world's most important progressive rock festivals, the Night of the Prog Festival at Loreley. Back in Buenos Aires, the band opened for Sons of Apollo and began work on their next album. For all lovers of hard, sophisticated rock music: seeing this Argentinian quintet live, if possible in their natural habitat, with their latest album, Stolen Pictures (2024), is a must.

Llegó entonces el momento de una extensa gira por Centroamérica. De vuelta en Buenos Aires, Fughu actuó como telonero de las leyendas italianas Premiata Forneria Marconi (PFM). En 2020, Fughu lanzó el álbum "Lost Connection" con diez nuevas canciones y, una vez más, destacadas colaboraciones. Esto consolidó aún más la reputación de la banda. En 2022, Fughu completó su segunda gira europea, esta vez actuando en importantes festivales de Alemania y Polonia. La reacción del público fue abrumadora. El broche de oro de esta gira fue un magnífico concierto en uno de los festivales de rock progresivo más importantes del mundo, el Night of the Prog Festival en Loreley. De regreso en Buenos Aires, la banda teloneó a Sons of Apollo y comenzó a trabajar en su próximo álbum.
