Box: Beta Band – Bonzo Dog Band – Edgar Broughton Band – EMI 2 (UK)

Es gab auch die CD-Boxen Original Album Serie (Warner, 5CD) und Original Album Classics (Sony/BMG, 3CD oder 5CD) im Platz sparenden Papp-Schuber. Da waren die einzelnen Original-Alben (je CD ein Album) in einfachen Papp-Taschen (Paper-Sleeve) in LP-Hüllen Replica-Design und ohne Booklet sowie meist auch ohne Bonus-Titel und aktuelles Remastering. Für Liebhaber die fast lückenlos die Entwicklung der Geschichte oder Teil-Geschichte der/des Künstler/s mittels Alben und Bonus-Material verfolgen möchten, bot EMI damals die preiswerteste Alternative zu den teils nicht mehr verfügbaren und/oder teuren Einzel-Alben/Singles. Auch wenn man den Output eines Künstlers beziehungsweise Band sowie eines Labels (Charisma, Decca, Harvest, Island, Motown, Vertigo, Virgin) auf zwei Boxen verteilt hatte, wie beispielsweise Steeleye Span, Robin Trower, Tangerine Dream oder UFO, die Quantität und Qualität bleibt immer gleichbleibend hoch. Bei den Label-Übersichten von Island und Virgin sind die sechs verschiedenen 3CD-Boxen sogar nach Zeit und/oder Thema gegliedert. Leider sind heute viele Ausgaben nur noch auf dem Gebraucht-Markt zu haben, dennoch findet man die immer wieder mal, suchen lohnt sich sehr. Also: AUGEN AUF !!!

Leider zahlt der Käufer heute eh fast nur noch Logistik und Vertrieb. So kommt es, dass man beispielsweise wie bei Peter Tosh, alle sechs Studioalben, plus Bonus-Titel, plus komplettes unveröffentlichtes Live-Konzert, alles 2012-Remastered, plus tolles informatives Booklet in 6-CD-Box für damals um die SchoTTischen 10 Euro bekommen konnte und im anderen Fall reinfällt mit einem Einzel-Album im vermeintlich wertigeren Digi-Pack ohne Bonus oder Mehrwert für den gleichen oder höheren Betrag. Was das 1996 gegründete schottische Quartett The Beta Band aus der Nähe von Edinburgh aus der Masse heraushob war vor allem, sie machten wirklich originäre, ungewöhnliche Musik, sie selbst nennen sie Folktronica. Die beiden singenden Gitarristen Steve Mason (Solo: King Biscuit Time, Black Affair) und Gordon Anderson (später Lone Pigeon, The Aliens) gründeten diese moderne Formation, Gordon musste gesundheitlich sehr schnell passen und wurde durch Richard Greentree ersetzt. Robin Jones (Schlagzeug) und John MacLean (DJ, Sampler, Keyboards) waren die Ergänzungen zum Quartett, beide musizierten später mit Gordon bei The Aliens. Natürlich verlöteten die Beta Band, wie zu der Zeit bei vielen Projekten nicht unüblich, auch vordergründig alles was sie auf ihren Streifzügen durchs Unterholz der Pop-Rock-Geschichte in ihre Finger kriegen konnten (von ELP über Rocky Stone Roses zu Funky George Clintons Parliament), doch darunter, dahinter und dazwischen wimmelt es von skurrilen, intelligenten und wunderschönen Schöpfungen, Ideen, die bereits ihre drei EPs zu leuchtenden, hellen, vor allem aber kitzelnden Sonnenstrahlen aus dem bunten Pop-Himmel machten. Lockere aber intelligente Kopplung von Britpop, Electronica, Folk, Funk, Reggae, Rap, Rock, Rockabilly, hier ist nichts sicher und von allem eine ordentliche Brise drin. Diese üppige Box bündelt nun mit The Regal Years – 1997-2004 (2013), eine komplette Karriere, eine Zusammenstellung auf sechs CD’s, jede Menge Songs von den EPs Champion Versions (1997), The Patty Patty Sound (1998), Los Amigos Del Beta Bandidos (1998) und die drei Alben The Beta Band (1999), Hot Shots II (2001), Heroes To Zeros (2004), die Beta Band für das Parlophone Sub-Label Regal aufgenommenen hat. Dazu gibt es reichlich unveröffentlichtes Material als Bonus: Live Titel, Remixe, BBC Radio Sessions, Studio Demos. Abgerundet wird dieses dicke Paket mit Texten von Mitspieler Tieftöner Richard Greentree. Wer keine Berührungsängste vor moderner Rock-Musik hat und neue Klang-Bilder erleben möchte sollte hier zuschlagen. Wieder das Voll-Programm einer außergewöhnlichen britischen Band. Die CDs sind zudem extra für dieses Set zusammengestellt worden und bieten daher ein durchgängig einheitliches Bild, weiterhin gibt es ein kleines Poster und ein Booklet mit den wichtigsten Informationen, Bildern und einer dreiseitigen Beta Band Retrospektive vom Zeitzeugen Richard. Wer sich dann die Doppel-DVD The Best Of The Beta Band: Film, mit Trailern, Promos, Dokus, Live-Aufnahmen, auch noch anschafft, hat wirklich fast alles von dieser besonderen Formation. Wirklich sehr spannendes Material.

Woher hat die US-Band Death Cab For Cutie ihren Namen ?? Von einem Song (vom Debüt Gorilla), der unter anderem im Beatles-Film Magical Mystery Tour zu hören/sehen ist. Und wer singt denn da ?? Richtig, die Bonzo Dog Band, die zuerst als Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band, später eben abgekürzt auftretende Formation ist nicht nur mit den Fab Four verbandelt (ein gewisser Apollo C. Vermouth alias Paul McCartney produzierte ihre Hit-Single I’m The Urban Spaceman, siehe US/CA: Urban Spaceman), sondern ist auch so etwas wie das musikalische Pendant zur legendären Comedy-Truppe Monty Python. Mehr noch, Bonzo’s Haupt-Songlieferant Neil Innes gilt nicht nur inoffiziell als siebtes Python-Mitglied, er arbeitete auch häufig mit Eric Idle zusammen (das ist der skurrile Typ, der im Film Das Leben des Brian am Kreuz hängend die Hymne Bright Side Of Life anstimmt) und gründete mit ihm auch die grandiose Beatles-Parodie-Band The Rutles. Zeit ihrer kurzen Existenz von 1967 bis 1971 haben die Bonzo´s dennoch 5 Alben herausgegeben, oben bereits erwähnt Gorilla (1967), The Doughnut In Granny’s Greenhouse (1968, US/CA als Urban Spaceman), Tadpoles (1969), Keynsham (1969), Let’s Make Up And Be Friendly (1972), deren einzeln herausgegebene 2007-Remaster-Versionen mit ihren originalen Album-Track-Listen noch einmal 2011 in kompakter Multi-Pack-Form unter dem Titel A Dog’s Life (The Albums 1967-1972) aufgelegt worden sind. Die drei CD´s offerieren eine wunderbare, satirische Song-Sammlung zwischen Traditional Jazz & eingängiger Pop-Melodik, voller dadaistischem Esprit und anarchistischem Humor. Zur Wiederentdeckung sind freigegebene Nummern wie Labio-Dental Fricative (1970: Eric Clapton mit Ukulele) des Neben-Projekt Vivian Stanshall Sean Head Showband oder die rare UA-Solo-Single Re-Cycled Vinyl Blues (1974) von Neil Innes, aber auch seltene Perlen wie My Brother Makes The Noises For The Talkies, Can Blue Men Sing The Whites oder Tubas In The Moonlight. Die insgesamt sagenhaften 72 Titel wurden bereits 1992 als Cornology als Box bei EMI veröffentlicht, jetzt aber alles noch einmal klanglich aufgefrischt. Das neue geschmackvolle Cover-Artwork wurde übrigens von Neil Innes selbst autorisiert.

Und wieder so eine volle Schatzkiste mit frühen Material aus dem britischen Classic-Rock-Schmelztiegel. Die 4CD-Box The Harvest Years 1969-1973 (2011) beinhaltet bekanntes Material der Edgar Broughton Band, wie beispielsweise die vollständigen 5 Harvest Alben Wasa Wasa (1969) mit den beiden bekannten Titeln Evil und Death Of An Electric Citizen der ersten Harvest Single (HAR5001) überhaupt, Sing Brother Sing (1970), Edgar Broughton Band (1971), In Side Out (1972) und Oora (1973), plus seltene Single A und B Seiten und den unveröffentlichten super raren Live-Mitschnitt vom legendären Hyde-Park Open Air Konzert am 18 Juli 1970. Ihr spezieller Psychedelic-Blues-Rock, manchmal mit Brit-Folk Einschlag ist Kult, darauf brauch man sicher nicht weiter eingehen, dazu gibt es in den digitalen Magazinen etliche Beiträge. What set the Scottish quartet The Beta Band, founded in 1996 near Edinburgh, apart from the crowd was above all that they made truly original, unusual music, which they themselves call folktronica. A relaxed but intelligent blend of Britpop, electronica, folk, funk, reggae, rap, rock and rockabilly – nothing is certain here, and there's a good dose of everything. This lavish box set, The Regal Years – 1997-2004 (2013), brings together their entire career, a compilation on six CDs, lots of songs from the EPs Champion Versions (1997), The Patty Patty Sound (1998), Los Amigos Del Beta Bandidos (1998) and the three albums The Beta Band (1999), Hot Shots II (2001), Heroes To Zeros (2004), which The Beta Band recorded for the Parlophone sub-label Regal. There is also plenty of unreleased material as a bonus: live tracks, remixes, BBC radio sessions and studio demos. This substantial package is rounded off with lyrics by bassist Richard Greentree. Anyone who is not afraid of modern rock music and wants to experience new soundscapes should snap this up. Once again, the full programme of an extraordinary British band. The CDs have also been compiled especially for this set and therefore offer a consistent overall picture. There is also a small poster and a booklet with the most important information, pictures and a three-page Beta Band retrospective by contemporary witness Richard. If you then purchase the double DVD The Best Of The Beta Band: Film, with trailers, promos, documentaries, live recordings, you really have almost everything from this special formation. Really very exciting material.

Where did the US band Death Cab For Cutie get their name? From a song (from their debut album Gorilla) that can be heard/seen in the Beatles film Magical Mystery Tour, among other places. And who's singing there? That's right, the Bonzo Dog Band, which initially performed as the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band, later shortened to its original name. They're not only connected to the Fab Four (a certain Apollo C. Vermouth, aka Paul McCartney, produced their hit single "I'm The Urban Spaceman," see US/CA: Urban Spaceman), but are also something like the musical counterpart to the legendary comedy troupe Monty Python. Moreover, Bonzo's main song supplier Neil Innes is not only unofficially considered the seventh member of Python, he also frequently collaborated with Eric Idle (the eccentric guy who sings the anthem Bright Side Of Life while hanging on a cross in the film Life of Brian) and founded the magnificent Beatles parody band The Rutles with him. Despite their brief existence from 1967 to 1971, the Bonzo's released five albums: Gorilla (1967), The Doughnut In Granny’s Greenhouse (1968, US/CA as Urban Spaceman), Tadpoles (1969), Keynsham (1969), and Let’s Make Up And Be Friendly (1972). The individually remastered versions released in 2007, featuring their original album track listings, were reissued in 2011 in a compact multi-pack format titled A Dog’s Life (The Albums 1967-1972). These three CDs offer a wonderful, satirical collection of songs, blending traditional jazz with catchy pop melodies, brimming with Dadaist spirit and anarchic humor. Available for rediscovery are tracks like "Labio-Dental Fricative" (1970: Eric Clapton with ukulele) from the Vivian Stanshall Sean Head Showband side project, or the rare UA solo single "Re-Cycled Vinyl Blues" (1974) by Neil Innes, but also rare gems like "My Brother Makes The Noises For The Talkies," "Can Blue Men Sing The Whites," and "Tubas In The Moonlight." The impressive 72 tracks were previously released as a box set by EMI in 1992 under the title "Cornology," but have now all been sonically remastered.
