er ist inspiriert von Leadbelly, den Beatles, Bartók, Coltrane und seinem Vater (Kirchen-Organist). Als 20-jähriger begann er als professioneller Musikant vielfältig zu arbeiten. Bekannt ist er als Violinist für seine Mitwirkung (1972-1975) bei den Progressive-Rockern King Crimson und bei Clearlight für das Album Forever Blowing Bubbles (1975). Der Pionier der elektrischen Violine blieb seiner musikalischen Linie bis heute treu, arbeitete musikalisch immer im Grenzbereich von Prog, Jazz-Rock, Fusion, Canterbury, war auch im Bereich Tanz und Theater als Musiker, Komponist, Produzent, Musikalischer Leiter, Regisseur aktiv und hat an Dutzenden Alben von zum Teil sehr bekannten Künstlern mitgearbeitet. Unten findet ihr eine Aufstellung einiger Kollaborationen.

Damit dieses Portrait kompakt bleibt hier noch ein paar Zeilen zu seinen drei künstlerischen Schwerpunkten: Arbeit als Solist, die Formation Radius und die aktuelle David Cross Band. Dort spielte er mit unterschiedlichen Musikern zusammen und geht mit denen auch auf Tour. Mit dem Album Arc Measuring (1988) starteten die Aufnahmen mit seiner Band Radius (fünf Alben mit Geoff Serle, Sheila Maloney) und er begann auch vermehrt Solo-Alben (1989: Memos From Purgatory) aufzunehmen. An denen waren immer wieder alte Mitstreiter aus dem King-Crimson-Umfeld beteiligt. 1999 gründete Cross sein eigenes Label Noisy Records, 2000 erschien dort Civilizations, das fünfte und vorerst letzte Album von Radius. Seit 2001 ist er Lehrstuhlinhaber für Musiklehre an der London Metropolitan University. 2004-2005 gab er Solo-Violin-Konzerte, unter anderem in London, Tokyo, Osaka und Athen. 2005 veröffentlichte er in Zusammenarbeit mit Mick Paul und Richard Palmer-James das vorerst letzte Solo-Album Closer Than Skin. Danach nahm er Alben nur noch als David Cross Band auf, zuerst Alive In The Underworld (2008). An dem aktuellsten Album Larks' Tongues @ 50 (2024) waren Cross, Maloney, Paul, Summerfield und Gitarrist Jonathan Casey beteiligt. David Cross Band 2026 – Visionär David Cross ist unermüdlicher suchender Improvisator und Experimentierer geblieben und die Rockmusik eröffnete ihm ein neues und breites Spektrum an Ausdrucksmöglichkeiten. Aktuell spielt er eine Violectra-E-Geige mit halben Bünden, fünf Saiten und Oktavpedal, wodurch sein Tonumfang vom tiefen Cello bis zum hohen Geigenton reicht. Im Quintett David-Cross-Band spielt der begeisterte englische Segelfan und Jaguar-Oldtimer-Liebhaber John Mitchell eine tragende Rolle als Sänger und virtuoser Gitarrist. Er ist Multi-Instrumentalist, Komponist, Produzent, Klang-Arbeiter (Outhouse Studios Reading) und gehört sicher zu den aktivsten und kreativsten Künstlern in England. Mitchell ist Mitglied der Progressive-Rock-Bands Frost*, It Bites und Arena. Er war außerdem Kopf hinter den Bands Kino und The Urbane, spielte Bass bei der Alternative-Rock-Band A aus Suffolk und seine Solo-Arbeiten veröffentlicht er unter dem Pseudonym Lonely Robot. John stand bereits live mit John Wetton (Asia), Martin Barre (Jethro Tull) und vielen anderen Schwergewichten auf der Bühne.

Tasten-Virtuosin Sheila Maloney arbeitete bereits mit der früheren David-Cross-Band (DCB) zusammen und schrieb und produzierte Lieder auf verschiedenen Alben. Außerdem wirkte sie an Studio-Aufnahmen mit Geoff Serle (Severe Test), für Radius und Sonicphonics mit. Neben ihrer eigenen Musik (Darkfish, 2025: Beyond) produzierte sie Mick Paul’s Album Parallel Lives und spielte dort auch Keyboards. Aktuell schreibt und spielt sie Keyboards für die US-Band The Fae. Bassist und Sänger Mick Paul stieß 1995 zur David Cross Band, wirkte an dem Album Exiles mit, auf dem auch Mitglieder von King Crimson, darunter Robert Fripp und John Wetton, zu hören waren. Seitdem hat er alle Veröffentlichungen der DCB mitproduziert, gesungen und gespielt und ist mit der Band in Europa und Japan aufgetreten. Im Juni 2021 veröffentlichte Mick sein Solo-Debüt Parallel Lives. Der Londoner Schlagzeuger Jack Summerfield ist auch Arrangeur, musikalischer Leiter und Dozent. In den letzten Jahren hat dieser versierte und energiegeladene Musiker eng mit herausragenden Künstlern weltweit zusammengearbeitet. From the church organ to the Violectra electric violin – with David Cross (violin, viola, Mellotron, electric piano), born in 1949 near Plymouth (southwest England), we encounter a protagonist of a now rare breed in progressive music. Music was in his blood, accompanying him since birth, and he is inspired by Leadbelly, the Beatles, Bartók, Coltrane, and his father (a church organist). At the age of 20, he began working in a variety of roles as a professional musician. He is known as a violinist for his contributions (1972-1975) to the progressive rock band King Crimson and to Clearlight for their album *Forever Blowing Bubbles* (1975). The pioneer of the electric violin has remained true to his musical path to this day, always working at the intersection of prog, jazz-rock, fusion, and Canterbury music. He has also been active in dance and theater as a musician, composer, producer, musical director, and director, and has contributed to dozens of albums by some very well-known artists. David Cross Band 2026 – Visionary David Cross has remained a tireless, searching improviser and experimenter, and rock music has opened up a new and broad spectrum of expressive possibilities for him. He currently plays a Violectra electric violin with half frets, five strings, and an octave pedal, giving him a range from the low notes of a cello to the high notes of a violin. In the David Cross Band quintet, the enthusiastic English sailing fan and classic Jaguar enthusiast John Mitchell plays a key role as singer and virtuoso guitarist. He is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, producer, sound engineer (Outhouse Studios Reading), and is certainly one of the most active and creative artists in England. Mitchell is a member of the progressive rock bands Frost*, It Bites, and Arena. He was also the driving force behind the bands Kino and The Urbane, played bass in the Suffolk alternative rock band A, and releases his solo work under the pseudonym Lonely Robot. John has already performed live on stage with John Wetton (Asia), Martin Barre (Jethro Tull) and many other heavyweights.
